Diversity, Inclusivity, and Tiaras
Phil Powell

This picture is from an outfit I first wore at Teslacon back in 2016: (click here). I chose to write about this outfit as it illustrates two of my driving principles in my dandyism as well as my life: diversity and inclusivity.

Diversity

The outfit represents not only my creative dandyism, but it also represents the importance for society to normalize men in traditionally "feminine" clothing options such as dresses, bright colors and patterns, or, in my case, feathers, flowers, jewelry, and makeup. Harry Styles appeared in the December issue of Vogue in what is traditionally considered "women's clothing", a concept that, I hope, we will replace with the idea of clothing being appropriate for all genders and gender identities, and, moreover, appropriate and acceptable in the workplace, school, church or place of worship, the supermarket, or out and about in the public forum. I hope that I too can contribute to the conversation of diversity using my outfits as a conversation starter, and this outfit, in my honest opinion, does just that and, dare I say, does it well.

Inclusivity

This outfit also represents the other importance in my life, but this is on a personal level: inclusivity. Earlier this year a movement was started among those in the DC-area based Goth scene, of which I have had my origin story (click here to read). A mysterious person called "The Tiara Fairy" mailed out tiaras to various goth persons in the group as a means of affirmation and love language in this COVID-19 ravaged environment we have faced. This wonderful anonymous individual felt fit to, one fine day, mail me a tiara, which I knew that I needed to pair with an appropriately-colored outfit to show it off, moreover, to express my gratitude to the person(s) who felt it in their heart(s) to include me in this love language. Inclusivity is very important in our society, especially with so many vulnerable and marginalized people out there who don't feel included in the conversation and the experience due to their race, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical, mental, or psychological ability, financial ability, body issues, age, etc. I want to contribute to the conversation of inclusivity, which I believe must accompany diversity, and this outfit, with the love gift of the tiara (Thank you, Tiara Fairy!), in my honest opinion, does just that and, dare I say, does it well.

Diversity and inclusivity go hand in hand, and they absolutely must go hand in hand in our being good allies, friends, and loved ones, and I hope that my dandyism can somehow contribute to that beautifully.
